Ylona Garcia is Scout’s rookie of the (new) year

Everyone loves a good origin story.

What gives us the motivation to root for the most noble of heroes and, sometimes, even the most nefarious of villains are their background stories. For Scout 38, those are the type of compelling beginnings we set out to discover—and our girl Ylona Garcia is right in the middle of hers.

Our cover girl is getting ready to change the game just by entering it. From actress to budding R&B musician, she continues to pave her way to success on her own terms. She’s the type of spark we want to signal in our first issue of the year.

This “Origin” issue, we talk about how things begin and the curious places they can end up from there. Get ready to see a throwback photo series of the college artist collective Young Liquid Gang, a portfolio review of Baybayin artist Kristian Kabuay, and the etymology of gay lingo.

We also capture rising forces just waiting to dominate: the rise of local game devs, the beginnings of young rap prodigy Alex Bruce, the Laguna hip-hop collective, and a coming-of-age fashion editorial of queer kids finding their sense of identity through makeup.

Looking back is making us look forward. Who’d have thought?

SCOUT issue no. 38 #YlonaforSCOUT will be in select newsstands starting Feb 19.
