To combat quarantine loneliness, Ben Gibbard performs for free through Facebook Live

Everyone from around the globe is doing their part to flatten the curve. Whether it’s through the bare minimum of social distancing or helping out on COVID-19 research, people are trying their best to stay sane and lend a helping hand along the way. This includes our favorite, indie rockstars like Death Cab For Cutie’s (DCFC) Ben Gibbard.

The vocalist of the famed indie rock band is hosting an intimate gig from the comforts of his own home. As he performs, he will stream it for fans around the globe.

He made the announcement this Mar. 17 through DCFC’s Facebook page. In his announcement, he writes, “Because we’re all going through this nightmare together we are quite literally NOT alone. Our lives and stories are all linked, maybe more now than they have ever been.” In his effort to lend a helping hand during this pandemic, he decided to host a livestream every day on Facebook.

“Be it with DCFC, Postal Service, or solo I have always been grateful for the honor you have bestowed upon us by choosing to congregate en masse around our music,” reads his Facebook post. “Some of you have traveled great distances and/or shelled out large sums of money to see us play and that has never been lost on me. So in this crazy and unprecedented time, I’d like to return the favor by coming to you.”

It’s not clear how long he would do his Facebook Live. In his post, he says he’ll play songs from his home studio daily. It will go live every day at 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). They are still working out the details, but he disclosed that he will be taking in requests and invite a guest or two through digital means.

The last time we heard from Death Cab, they performed their song “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” with Lana Del Rey. Who’s to say she won’t come on the stream as a guest?

As a long-time DCFC fan, it’s nice to see your idols doing their part to flatten the curve. It’s also lovely to hear how he acknowledges their fans’ sacrifices to see them live. Sure, we love them as our playlist mainstays. But they’re humans too—and they just want to help out like everyone else.
