Johan Kyle’s ‘Drunk in Manila’ is a disco bop for parties future

SHARE

Our local nightlife feels like a relic we’ve been trying to resurrect. And while our grandparents shared their stories of the past through words, we’ve taken to raising it back through music—with dynamic visuals to boot. Case in point: the latest music video for “Drunk in Manila,” courtesy of all-around creative Johan Kyle.

Directed by the artist himself, Johan Kyle’s ode to the metro’s nightlife is a head bopper right from the get-go. Like a good old-fashioned night out, its first surprise cameo—Rosemarie Vega of “90 Day Fiancé” fame—pops in and says, “O, ano? Tara na, hit it!”

The track—which features Kimi Almazora—is fused with ’70s discotheque beats hardwired for party scenes. But the music video pushes its disco vibes into a different degree, thanks to the kitschy green screen editing and references tied to local humor (“Ma’am, pa-void!”), interspersed with a star-studded cast that comes one after another.

Aside from Vega, “Drunk in Manila” boasts a lengthy cast page including Cassy Legaspi, Ricci Rivero, Rain Matienzo, Miguel Odron, Jachin Manere, and more. And like what the kids say, it is truly a bop. (Side note: Is “M-A-N-I-L-A” the new YMCA?)
