Turn your selfie into a Frida Kahlo self-portrait with this app

In just two months, we’ve already turned ourselves into anime waifus and 1800s artworks that should land us a spot in the Louvre—but the experimentation isn’t over yet. This time around, you (and your surroundings) can turn into a masterpiece of the artist of your choice: Take your pick with greats like Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama or Leonardo da Vinci.

In collaboration with cultural institutions like the UK’s National Gallery and Japan’s MOA Museum of Art, Google Arts and Culture’s Art Transfer can remix works like Kahlo’s “Self Portrait With Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird” and Kusama’s “The Heart of the Universe.” You read that right—your room can finally have the polka-dotted backdrop that your heart, but not your mom, desires.

This isn’t a simple overlay trick. Google’s AI utilizes an “algorithmic recreation,” fusing both art and technology. “Artificial intelligence in particular can be a powerful tool not just in the hands of artists, but also as a way for people to experience and learn about art in new ways,” reads the Google Arts and Culture blog post.

Back in 2018, Google’s Art Selfie feature received flak when it matched Caucasian subjects with Asian, black and Latin users. With this upgrade, we’re hoping for that much-needed diversity.

If reality isn’t enough, you can decorate your Animal Crossing character and island with masterpieces too—no million-dollar auctions required.

You can download Google Arts and Culture on iOS and Android.
