What Is Up With The #MannequinChallenge?

By Rach Acorda

In case you were living under a rock these past few days, the internet lords have thrown out Running Man, Juju on that beat, and Dabbing to make way for the new trend in town: the #MannequinChallenge.

If it’s the first time you’re seeing this, you might be wondering what’s so special about frozen people (did Elsa just pass by?) but Rae Sremmurd ft. Gucci Mane’s “Black Beatles” playing at the background of every video, has finally made the world still. And its spreading fast.

Like any other social media craze, no one really knows where, when, and how a trend legitimately started. But for this Mannequin Challenge, its fame skyrocketed when a group of filmmakers turned this playful trend on highlighting a haunting re-enactment of controversial deaths through racist police brutality.

Its chilling reality through frozen frames emphasizes the past crimes that led to the creation of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Each powerful vignette showed how policemen abuse their power, as each clip used a police scanner audio soundtrack in lieu of Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” to re-enact these iconic moments. The video has been viewed more than 700,000 times to this day. It was even brought up again as a little memorial wake after Trump’s presidential win.

Aside from this political take, we know that you’re also low-key scrolling for the best mannequin challenge out there. Don’t worry, we’ve rounded up the top three trending ones for your eyes to feast on, too. Who knows, maybe it’s your turn to go viral?

Of course, Rae Sremmurd and their homies would also have one. (Spot Lil’ Wayne.)

And the most awesome one, so far, as the Cleveland Cavaliers took it to the White House:
