Rejoice Greendale Human Beings, ‘Community’ might actually have a movie

#SixSeasonsAndAMovie might finally come true. According to former show director Joe Russo (yes the other half of Marvel’s The Russo Brothers), Netflix can make the much-awaited ‘Community’ movie possible.

In an interview with Collider, Russo notes that the movie is possible due to its popularity on the streaming site. “We’d certainly be willing to do it. We love our Community family. That cast, we’re all still very close to all of them. It’d certainly be schedule-depending for us,” says Russo. “But I believe there will be a ‘Community’ movie, especially now that it’s doing so well on streaming. Someone like Netflix could step up and make that movie.”

Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger, also confirmed this possibility in a Variety interview. McHale expressed his optimism that the #SixSeasonsAndAMovie will come true. “For a long time I was like, ‘Never gonna happen.’ And now I think with the renewed interest‚—and I know the cast is interested—that it could happen,” says McHale. “Alison [Brie] tweeted that she got a phone call from Sony. They still haven’t called me, maybe Matthew Lillard will take over. There’s way more rumblings than there used to be.”

Would it be a big budget comeback with a paintball war to boot? Hmm, probably not. And Russo commented that he doesn’t mind the movie going back to its underdog roots. “Part of what is so compelling about the show is that it’s very quaint, it’s Greendale as an underdog,” comments the former “Community” director. “I don’t think you’d want to suddenly execute it with crazy high production value and set design. Unless we were going somewhere fantastical or doing one of our genre exploration concepts.”

“Community” is a beloved TV cult classic by “Rick and Morty” showrunner Dan Harmon. It stars Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Yvette-Nicole Brown, Ken Jeong and of course, Donald Glover. Since its Netflix takeover this year, the show has had a resurgence with the site’s subscribers.

Will it encourage Netflix to make the much-awaited movie possible? For so long, the inside joke #SixSeasonsAndAMovie remained as a mere meme within fan circles. But with this news from McHale and Russo—we might see our favorite study group once more.
