Brace yourselves, intergalactic adventure fans. The first Korean space blockbuster film “Space Sweepers” is coming to Netflix on Feb. 5.
The trailer shows Earth in 2092 as an inhospitable wasteland where life has to be sustained elsewhere in outer space. Spaceship Victory, one of the vessels orbiting space that thrives by saving debris from the vast extraplanetary plane, carries the crew of space pilot Tae-ho (Song Joong-ki), ex-space pirate Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), spaceship engineer Tiger Park (Jin Sun-kyu), and a military robot called Bubs (Yoo Hai-jin).
As if Song Joong-ki isn’tt enough reason to watch the movie, the plot is equally heady, revolving around the crew that at one time, banded together and snatched a space shuttle debris from other space sweepers. Then, they discover a human-like robot that could potentially endanger the world… before going on a mission to save the world with all the misfits you can imagine (in outer space, of course).
South Korean film director Jo Sung-hee, who also directed “A Werewolf Boy,” “Phantom Detective” and “End of Animal,” revealed that the idea came to him 10 years ago “when his friend told him about the dangers of space junk.” The film was “primarily produced by South Korean film company Merry Christmas, with additional financing from China’s Huayi Tencent Entertainment, and visual effects from Seoul-based Dexter Studios,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
