With social injustice piling up seemingly every day, citizens are left to take the mantle and fight for the bare minimum. But with human and civil rights already riddled with legal jargon and the nitty gritty, how are common folk able to understand what they have a right to in the first place?

One group of students from De La Salle University’s College of Law aims to simplify human rights through a free webinar on June 10 called “Hiraya: Talakayan ng Karapatan.” According to them, “Hiraya’s” objective is to present human rights education as digestible as possible for lay people, as well as to encourage the youth to join the struggle for human rights.

“Legal education is a means to promote a heightened awareness of human rights in Philippine society,” they wrote. “Consistent with this vision, and to ensure that it is embraced by the next generation of leaders, human rights education is integrated with our core courses.”

The webinar’s speakers include commissioner Karen Dumpit of the Commission on Human Rights, Aileen Bacalso of the International Coalition against Enforced Disappearances, and women’s rights advocate, Samira Gutoc. Closing remarks will be delivered by Atty. Chel Diokno.

“Hiraya: Talakayan ng Karapatan” is happening on June 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. And don’t fret, non-DLSU folks: The webinar is free for anyone to join. Just register through their Google Form.
