You might find your music taste in Furiosa

Stale. The word may have come across your mind when you see a well-known gig production’s usual lineup. We have to admit, some prods can get a little repetitive on the sound they cater to the metro’s gig rats. One can feel that all the same bands are being taken. With monthly gig event Furiosa however, they’re trying to do away with that with their lineup of bands you might not have heard of.

“We actually started Furiosa as a venue, a vehicle, where new and veteran acts can play together and have a sense of camaraderie and community.”

“We are primarily focusing on less prominent genres like dream pop, indie folk, indie pop, indie rock, noise-rock, post-rock, shoegaze, math rock, and space rock,” Romel Chua of Furiosa pointed out. “We actually started Furiosa as a venue, a vehicle, where new and veteran acts can play together and have a sense of camaraderie and community.” 12 gigs and one not-so underrated Dream Pop Shoegaze Fetê stage later, Furiosa isn’t half bad on doing just that for the scene.

“Other prod outfits have their own niche music genres as well. Furiosa was created to be a haven and a crucible for the bands in these genres.”

“Let’s face it, even with the proliferation of prod outfits, a lot of bands in the genres above find it difficult nowadays to play in an environment where they feel that they truly belong,” Romel brought up. “Other prod outfits have their own niche music genres as well. Furiosa was created to be a haven and a crucible for the bands in these genres.”Bands like Identikit, The Strange Creatures, Pastilan Dong, and Narcloudia, have found their home in Furiosa.

With Furiosa marking one year since it’s conception, you can see what we mean at their anniversary gig happening this August 31 in Mow’s, Quezon City.

“Let’s face it, even with the proliferation of prod outfits, a lot of bands in the genres above find it difficult nowadays to play in an environment where they feel that they truly belong.”

As they celebrate tomorrow the team behind the monthly event is looking forward to widening the local soundscape.  “Apart from benefit gigs to help organizations that we believe in, we are looking into helping fellow artists/friends launch their albums on the Furiosa stage,” Romel teased about Furiosa’s future plans. “Maybe do Fête de la Musique next year or… put up our own music festival,”

The word stale is sometimes inevitable as you frequent a certain movement. But it shouldn’t be the first word that pops up when we think of the local scene. With the art and music scene here growing further and further, supporting musicians going against the usual niche is just what we need to do. And avenues like Furiosa is what our local music scene is always in need of.
