UNIQLO U’s spring/summer 2018 Is our summer uniform

The first piece I’ve ever purchased from UNIQLO was an Oxford Long Sleeve Shirt in blue and off white. Six years later and a couple of sizes up, the same Oxford Long Sleeve shirts can still be found on shelves. Besides the fabric getting better and the construction more precise, it’s the same shirt I fell in love with in 2012.

The Oxford Shirt is an ode to UNIQLO’s consistency, but it’s one of the many pieces UNIQLO improves and releases every season. But can a brand known for quality and consistency still make space for exploration?

UNIQLO answered that in 2017 with the launch of UNIQLO U – a line dedicated to reinventing wardrobe basics while exploring new shapes and fabrics. Led by former Hermès artistic director, Christophe Lemaire, the past collections featured modern classics that looked timeless, yet fit perfectly in today’s fashion. The Spring/Summer 2018 collection is no different.

Inspired by the feelings brought about by a spontaneous afternoon on the beach or a bike ride on the first day of summer, this year’s Spring/Summer collection was crafted with beauty and utility in mind, allowing you to get the best out of summmer’s simple pleasures.

Last week, UNIQLO gave us a preview of this season’s collection. Here are some of our favorite pieces:

Hickory Oversized L/S Shirt
The wide fit and relaxed cut makes it a perfect overshirt for the season. Layer it unbuttoned over a plain white tee to look like you’re about to do something important without having to suffer in this heat.

Open Collar Long-Sleeve Shirt
The open collar made a strong comeback late last year, and this season’s collection continues the tito legacy with a wide range of shirts in muted colors. Think of this shirt dancing in the wind when you start crafting the beach fits.

Open Collar Short-Sleeved Shirt
The highlight of the women’s side of the collection is a pajama-style shirt with side slits and a long back that would look great tucked in or out. Perfect if you’re the type to get out of bed at 6pm on a Saturday night to head straight to dinner and drinks with friends.

Striped S/S T-Shirt
For a line that some may label minimalist, this seemed like a risk. But it’s one that paid off. The colors scream 90’s skate and surf, and the roomy construction with lengthened sleeves makes this tee one of the more versatile and iconic pieces from this collection.
