There’s a new Filipino BL series, and no—it’s not ‘Sakristan’

If you want to watch a Filipino BL minus a toxic director at its helm, this might be the series you are waiting for. Get ready BL fans—we’re blessing your Friday with some local content.

The production company that gave us “Die Beautiful” and “Bwakaw” is launching a digital BL series this May 22, 8 p.m. “Gameboys” is the brainchild by director Ivan Andrew Payawal. It stars upcoming actors Elijah Canlas (“Past, Present, Perfect”) and Kokoy De Santos (“Fuccbois”).

“There is always ‘kilig’ (fluff) in this genre and I think that’s why we love it so much. But more than the kilig, ‘Gameboys’ is a simple story of two people finding a connection and I think people can relate to that, regardless of gender,” says Direk Ivan Andrew Payawal in an interview with Psycho Milk. It’s your coming-of-age story about two teenage boys who eventually learns that they’re falling for each other.

We have BL series in the Philippines. Although, there are only two that exist. The first one is GMA’s “My Husband’s Lover,” a primetime teleserye that aired back in 2013, and TEAM Magazine’s digital series “Hanging Out,” which was the first Filipino gay digital series by Petersen Vargas.

Controversial director Darryl Yap is also working on a limited BL series. In ABS-CBN’s Push, Yap described his BL series as sweet, scandalous and sincere. But we don’t really expect much from a director who made child rape a punchline.

So far, there are little details about how the series will play out. All that’s left for us to do is to watch out for the series on The IdeaFirst Company Youtube channel—and hope that it’s the Filipino BL series we deserve.
