Haruki Murakami’s personal vinyl picks are now a Spotify playlist

Haruki Murakami has now not only made it to our top book faves, but also our music picks, too.

Go on a virtual deep dive through Murakami’s personal vinyl collection with this playlist courtesy of one Masamaro Fujiki, a Tokyo-based industrial designer and apparent Murakami fan.

The playlist currently has 3,275 songs spanning almost 233 hours. The selection is an eclectic mix, with tracks from classics like Mozart to jazz greats Chet Baker or King Curtis to more contemporary acts like The Beach Boys.

The playlist is based on answers in Murakami’s temporary 2015 project, “Murakami-san no Tokoro,” a question and answer website where fans could ask the famed writer anything and everything for a certain period of time.

The Japanese novelist is known for his dreamlike writing style, a facet of which is his exceptionally vivid style of writing about music. Often, Murakami’s characters notably listen to specific artists and genres—much like the author himself, who likes listening to records while writing. Having also been a former jazz club owner for 15 years, he’d be one to know a thing or two about music.
