While the government’s own provisions are leaving folks a little unsettled (and understandably so), it seems that we’re still functioning under the age-old adage of “if you want a thing done right, you gotta do it yourself.” (Insert our collective sigh here.) Schools and universities are stepping up in leading research and lending a hand for the welfare of underserved communities. Take for example De La Salle University’s campus in Taft Avenue, which has opened its campus doors as a temporary shelter for the homeless.
In light of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine, the university took to Facebook to talk about their recent efforts in helping the conditions of those affected. As of writing, 79 individuals are currently housed on the 2nd floor of the Enrique Razon Sports Center.

The “temporary sanctuary” is run alongside the KALINGA program of Divine Word Missionaries (SVD). “SVD volunteers are looking after the basic needs of those who are taking shelter at the Sports Center,” the school’s post reads. As seen in the photos, those part of the initiative are also practicing proper distancing with spots spaced apart from each other. Meanwhile, across from DLSU’s campus, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde is also sheltering around 69 people.
