You can help out Indigenous communities with this folktale zine

Just like the next literary nerd, I’d gladly gorge on Philippine folklore content without batting an eye. For those in the same camp, local artists have created a folklore zine that’s a feast for the eyes—and it’s for a good cause, too.

Independent brand consultants Serious Studio and risograph press Bad Student will soon release “Gunitaan,” a folklore zine that retells stories from Mabel Cook Cole’s 1916 anthology “Philippine Folk Tales.” Ethnic communities from different regions of the country inspire each story’s design, with notable picks like the Tinguians’ “The Sun and the Woman in Flames” and Visayan folk tale “Why Dogs Wag their Tails.” The folk tales have been retold in English and Filipino.

The zine is available for preorder until  Nov. 30.  Those who happen to find themselves in Tokyo from Nov. 16 to 30 may also avail themselves of “Gunitaan” at the Tokyo Art Book Fair.

Proceeds from the sale of “Gunitaan” will benefit Indigenous communities supported by the civil society organization PAGASA.

A friendly reminder: “Gunitaan” is a limited edition piece, so head over to its site if you want it for your zine collection.
