How to survive small talk at holiday gatherings

SHARE

The holiday season is the most beautiful time of the year. ‘Tis the season for cooler weather, with tons of gifts to unwrap, and countless gatherings to attend, from family reunions to dinners with friends you haven’t seen in years. But then, these parties are also venues for disasters.

Let’s begin with the basics. The moment you enter a party where you barely know anyone, you’ll realize you should have stayed in bed with a cup of hot chocolate and a Christmas movie. Well, maybe you’re acquainted with some of the guests. Still though, you don’t know them enough to keep the conversation running. Spell awkward.

Before you know it, you’ve retreated home with a lame excuse.

Yes, it’s dizzying to keep up with the pleasantries and small talks in holiday gatherings. Although it’s also a must to have a party for one a la Carly Rae Jepsen, this doesn’t mean you should skip all the Christmas parties. Come on, we only do this once a year.

Our weapon of choice to dodge awkward situations is our clothing. If anything, clothes are good in both starting conversations and cutting long silences. So, this season, cop these looks and let your clothes do the talking.

Embrace the ugly

Remember when Spongebob made a sweater out of his lashes for Squidward? That’s quite an ugly (and itchy) sweater. Like that sweater made of lashes and love, the ugly Christmas sweater gives a cozy vibe akin to that feeling when you watch cheesy Christmas movies. That’s the novelty of the ugly sweater.

With stuffed reindeers, garlands, bells, and socks sewn to the garment, you literally become the spirit of Christmas when you wear these sweaters. But trust us, there’s no better conversation starter than these. Of course, you’ll always be ready for the ‘Gram—the ringing sleigh bells would look great on Boomerang. This Christmas collection also includes cutesy baubles that would make for perfect presents.

Wear more than one layer of clothes

This is the most beautiful time of the year to wear more than one layer of clothes minus the sweaty armpits—thanks to Amihan! If you’re somewhat the Grinch of your family and friends, this might be the most acceptable look to wear. Bring out your favorite prints and layer them with vibrant colors and textures like a fluffy faux fur jacket. Everyone will come up to you and say, “Nice jacket!”

Make it shine

If there is an element that’s always associated with Christmas (both the decors and the songs), that would be the shimmer. Let yourself dazzle in co-ords, mini dresses, and jumpsuits. It’s a little too extra, but it doesn’t hurt to get that boost of confidence that will transform you into the life of the party. It’s your time to shine!
