Anime-focused entertainment websites Crunchyroll and Anime News Network have reported that the “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” franchise is getting a new musical adaptation, as announced during AnimeJapan 2023 on Mar. 25.

While we’re still waiting for more solid information about the upcoming musical adaptation, the cast seem to have revealed themselves already: Japanese actors Koji Kominami and Ryotaro Akazawa will play Lelouch Lamperouge and Suzaku Kururugi, respectively.

On Twitter, Koji and Ryotaro expressed their pleasure for being part of the cast. In Japanese, Koji wrote, “I’m very happy to be part of this popular historical series. We will deliver wonderful work.” Meanwhile, Ryotaro shared, “I’ve loved this anime series since I was a student. I’ll do my best!”

According to the announcement, the musical adaptation will happen in September this year. Other deets about the play have yet to be posted. To all Filipinos who are certified fans, this might be your sign to fulfill your “Code Geass” dreams and travel to Japan.

Created by production company Sunrise, the “Code Geass” anime series first premiered in 2006. Its story follows high schooler Lelouch Lamperouge (a.k.a. the black prince) who was granted the “power of absolute obedience” to lead Japan’s rebellion against the authoritarian rule of the Holy Britannian Empire.

The anime’s follow-up “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2” chapter was later aired in 2008. Its production company had also produced films based on the series, which include “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: The Awakening Path,” “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: The Rebellion Path,” “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: The Imperial Path,” and the latest among the franchise, “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection.”

In previous years, the anime series has been adapted into stage and musical plays three times. The first adaptation was in 2012, titled “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Souran Eve” (Riot’s Eve). In the same year, the play was followed by a musical adaptation of “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Majin ni Sasageru Prelude (A Prelude Dedicated to the Sorcerer),” which was performed by an all-male cast. And lastly, the live show version of “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: A-Live Fantastic Dream Show”  happened in 2013.
