There is definitely something about celebrities coming together with their polished looks on the red carpet while their work is being celebrated, so it comes as no surprise at all that the world watches awards shows and galas unfold—well, especially when there’s a lot of scenes going on all at once.
With the glitz and glamor surely also comes the drama that makes the event even more exciting, and the Golden Globes 2024—one of January’s highlights—was surely no exception to all this. From an inanimate object becoming a star itself to jokes that sadly didn’t land, here are moments that definitely caught people’s attention from this year’s Golden Globes.
Jacob Elordi’s bathwater-scented candle on the red carpet
If there is a name that you’ve probably been hearing everywhere lately, it’s most likely Jacob Elordi. Apart from the face card that people rave about, his surprising performance as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” to his portrayal of Felix Catton in “Saltburn” explain well why Jacob is bound to be everybody’s reigning man crush. So, it comes as no surprise that a Jacob Elordi bathwater-scented candle exists and is actually for sale. Inspired by a scene in “Saltburn” with Barry Keoghan (Oliver Start), the candle comes in three aromas: vanilla, comfort spice, and sea breeze.
Of course, his “Saltburn” castmates Rosamund Pike and Barry Keoghan, who famously slurped his bath water in one of the scenes of the dark comedy-psychological film by Emerald Fennell, did not escape the candle questions on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet. As a cherry on top, “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and America Ferrera were also asked about the candle. America said it smelled “good”.

Jo Koy’s joke not being in the room
It definitely means a lot to be able to host such a big event with the biggest stars in one room together, so it must have been a big deal for comedian Jo Koy to have the opportunity. Top it off with the fact that he’s the first Filipino-American to have the honor. While Fil-Am communities and stars have been happy and excited for him, sadly, Jo Koy’s jokes were not landing the way they should have.
Though Jo Koy has pointed out that he didn’t have enough time before the gig after booking it, only having eight days to prepare a monologue, both the stars present at the gala and netizens proved to be more disappointed than happy with his hosting debut stint as he stuck with dated jokes with misogynistic undertones.

The internet debating over “Barbie’s” “made-up” award
“Barbie” was arguably one of the most talked about movies of 2023. With the amazing performance of the cast along with the script, eargasmic soundtrack, and direction of Greta Gerwig, it’s not unlikely for “Barbie” to bag some awards. For this year’s Golden Globes, they took home the best original song award for motion picture with Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” (which, by the way, has also been dominating TikTok).
Apart from that, “Barbie” is also the first recipient of the cinematic and box office achievement award which fans on social media thought to be a “participation” award so that the movie could win something, and believed the cast and Greta Gerwig deserved better.
Icons maximizing their joint slay
From Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), to Donna (Meryl Streep) and Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) gush-worthy reunions of onscreen pairings made it an even bigger day for annoying people (like me). Pop star besties Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift caught gossiping also made the internet curious—lip readers needed to be called to find out what tea they were spilling.

Heartwarming wins
Of course to cap this all off, despite everything chaotic, there were also a lot of heartwarming moments that happened at the Golden Globes. These include the awards sweep of “Oppenheimer,” taking home five awards, which included Cillian Murphy’s best actor in a drama film award and “Succession” taking home four with Kieran Caulkin’s win for best actor in a TV Drama where he jokingly told Pedro Pascal to “suck it” while also thanking “Succession,” and saying this was a “nice moment for me.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Beef” reigned supreme while making history at the limited series category taking home three awards. These include best limited series, best actor for a limited series (making Steven Yeun the second Asian-American actor to win this award at the Golden Globes following Filipino-American Darren Criss), and best actress in a limited series (making Ali Wong the first actor of Asian descent to win the award).
