Just as we’re inching closer to the four-month mark of quarantine, society’s drastic changes continue to impact a huge chunk of the working class. Case in point: public utility drivers. If you want to lend a hand to your local jeepney driver, artist Fran Alvarez is holding a special sale of a jeepney-themed zine with all proceeds going to the cause.
“Gumawa ako ng special sale ng aking zine na ‘Ladies in Jeepneys.’ Lahat po ng proceeds ay i-dodonate!” says Fran on her Instagram post, announcing the special fundraiser of her zine “Ladies in Jeepneys.” Seen as slices of Filipinas’ daily lives, the 36-page, full-color zine is an illustration project featuring different women and girls Fran has encountered during her everyday commute.
“I am very much inspired by how women carry themselves in the haggard environment of jeepneys and Manila chaos. It’s part homage, part diary, part documentation,” Fran writes on the website’s description. The project started in 2016 with the artist’s first batch of drawings, which are all made with gouache paint and pencil.
